engagement party"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our neighbor Lahcen threw an engagement party for his daughter on November 9th. \u00a0The first we knew of it was the convoy of cars pulling up to park along the street as the fianc\u00e9&#8217;s family arrived. \u00a0Actually, we&#8217;d had some earlier clues: music playing in the house and the occasional burst of ululation. \u00a0I really want to learn how to ululate: I&#8217;m so impressed by that high, vibrato-on-steroids female cry that defines celebration here.<a href=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P1000438.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1155\" src=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P1000438-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"P1000438\" width=\"604\" height=\"453\" platters of sweets and a beautiful array of flowers, is greeted with another set of ululations, and music at the gate.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P1000439.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1156\" separate groups. \u00a0James has gone with the men, who are nibbling on pastilla, a flaky pastry filled with chicken or occasionally pigeon.<br \/>\n<a \u00a0He&#8217;s a good neighbor and a kind man. \u00a0Whenever he sees us looking intrigued by something happening in his house, he invites us in. \u00a0We miss him and his family now that
