{"id":1407,"date":"2013-12-21T23:49:33","date_gmt":"2013-12-21T23:49:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/?p=1407"},"modified":"2024-04-19T19:24:13","modified_gmt":"2024-04-19T19:24:13","slug":"ourika-and-saffron","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/?p=1407","title":{"rendered":"Ourika and saffron"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P10101381.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1409\" src=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P10101381-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"P1010138\" width=\"604\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P10101381-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P10101381-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/a>Driving the back road between Demnate and Ourika, we have these wonderful views of snow dusting the high Atlas, with green fields and harvested fields alternating below.<\/p>\n<p>The main road of Ourika is a bit of a come down: it feels a little like an American strip mall, with hotels, restaurants, shops and workshops all stretched unendingly along the road. \u00a0It&#8217;s hard to see how a saffron growing center or an olive oil museum would fit in here.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the saffron center is about a kilometer down a side road, with another turning off that road. \u00a0Suddenly we&#8217;re pulling up in front of a gate that seems to have no space for visitors. \u00a0We park and open the gate and find ourselves in something like a secret garden.<\/p>\n<p>December is high tangerine season, and these trees are loaded with fruit. \u00a0The evening sun picks out each &#8220;golden apple of the sun,&#8221; supposedly the fruit of Hesperides&#8217; mythical garden.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P1010142.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1411\" src=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P1010142-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"P1010142\" width=\"604\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P1010142-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P1010142-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pathways lined with rosemary or lavender keep the evening air sweet, and provide a secondary harvest, with herbs drying on racks behind the main display center.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P1010146.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1413\" src=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P1010146-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"P1010146\" width=\"604\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P1010146-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P1010146-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>James, resister of goats, is the first to spot this small herd on the other side of the path:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P1010144.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1412\" src=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P1010144-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"P1010144\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P1010144-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P1010144-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P1010148.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1414\" src=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P1010148-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"P1010148\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P1010148-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/P1010148-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>More permaculture!
