the courtyard of the Bou Inania or Al-Attarine is that the design is overwhelming: it feels impossible to process all the wealth of visual detail and beauty. \u00a0(Rather than focusing on a single place in this post, I&#8217;ll be using images from both medersas [Islamic schools] \u00a0as I wrestle with the kinds and inter-relationships of Islamic patterns.)<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" and studying and praying in this space every day, the pattern would work on you at a subliminal level\u2014or perhaps each day you might pick out a different element, a different image or detail, as a how can we receive the gift of this place more deeply than a superficial, dizzying glance?<br \/>\n<a the heavens. \u00a0The cedar may be the only original component here: the plaster has certainly been renewed, and some of the zellij shows its age.<\/p>\n<p>According to Daud Sutton, \u201cThe visual structure of Islamic design has two key aspects: calligraphy using Arabic script\u2014one of the world\u2019s great scribal traditions\u2014and abstract ornamentation using a varied but remarkably integrated visual language.\u201d (<i>Islamic design: a genius for geometry<\/i>, 2007, 1)<\/p>\n<p>Calligraphy<br \/>\nCalligraphy tends to be placed at eye level or slightly above\u2014never below the head\u2014and it turns the oral tradition of the Qu\u2019ran (which, as you may know, is the <i>recitation<\/i> of the visions granted to Mohammed, and only belatedly a written text) into luxuriant visual beauty.\u00a0 For anyone struggling to read Arabic script, the beauty quickly overwhelms the meaning, but for students writing and memorizing different verses of the Qu\u2019ran on a daily basis, the beauty presumably extends the meaning of the verse.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/DSC06727.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-538\" src=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/DSC06727-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"SONY DSC\" width=\"168\" \/>\nThe ornamentation surrounding this calligraphy \u201crevolves around two poles: geometric pattern, the harmonic and symmetrical subdivision of the plane giving rise to intricately interwoven designs that speak of infinity and the omnipresent center; and idealized plant form or arabesque, spiraling tendrils, leaves, buds and flowers embodying organic life and rhythm\u201d (Sutton, 1).\u00a0 Infinity and the omnipresent center: Allah is the center of all things, of the infinitely varied development of the universe.\u00a0 For Keith Critchlow, geometry \u201creflects the facets of a jewel, the purity of the snowflake and the frozen flowers of radial symmetry\u201d while biomorphic design registers \u201cthe glistening flank of a perspiring horse, the silent motion of a fish winding its way through the water, the unfolding and unfurling of the leaves of the vine and rose.\u201d (<i>Islamic Patterns: An Analytical and Cosmological Approach<\/i>, 1976, 8)\u00a0 All three aspects of Islamic pattern inter-relate: biomorphic pattern relies on geometrical relationships for its tessellation and expansion;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/DSC06730.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-537\" src=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/DSC06730-1024x574.jpg\" alt=\"SONY DSC\" width=\"604\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/DSC06730-1024x574.jpg 1024w, calligraphy may lean toward biomorphic flowing lines on the one hand<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_0786.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-517\" src=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_0786-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0786\" width=\"300\" other.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_0702.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-412\" src=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_0702-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0702\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_0702-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_0702-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Biomorphic design<br \/>\nAdam stresses the logic inherent in the biomorphic elements of Islamic design: spirals are curves that look back to their points of origin.\u00a0 Biomorphic designs flow out, then back, bowing in humility to the creator.\u00a0 Balance is central to biomorphic design: nothing should stand out.\u00a0 All is humility and peace.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/DSC06769.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-541\"
