{"id":54,"date":"2013-08-01T12:01:10","date_gmt":"2013-08-01T12:01:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/?p=54"},"modified":"2024-04-19T19:24:16","modified_gmt":"2024-04-19T19:24:16","slug":"the-neighbor-then-the-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/?p=54","title":{"rendered":"The neighbor, then the house."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Al jar, thumma ddar. \u00a0When house-hunting, the Moroccan proverb says, choose your neighbor first, then choose your house. \u00a0Somewhere I read about an Islamic teaching that insists on the importance of looking after one&#8217;s neighbors, up to 40 houses in all directions. \u00a0That&#8217;s a sizeable neighborhood!<\/p>\n<p>Said adapted this for us: choose your landlord first, then your house. \u00a0It&#8217;s more important to have a good landlord, one who will work with you, than to have the perfect house. \u00a0But we really like both our landlord and our new home. \u00a0Omar (that first letter is actually more guttural than it looks) is terrifically warm and welcoming; he also speaks fluent English, which makes it easier to appreciate how thoughtful and articulate he is. \u00a0Omar&#8217;s son actually lives in Philadelphia and did a master&#8217;s degree at Villanova, so we&#8217;re also all struck by the bizarrely small world we inhabit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC05581.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-55\" alt=\"SONY DSC\" src=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC05581-300x168.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC05581-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC05581-1024x574.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-60\" alt=\"SONY DSC\" src=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC05591-300x168.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC05591-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maghrebi-voices.swarthmore.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC05591-1024x574.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Omar&#8217;s house is unusual in several respects: it separates public areas (ground floor) and private sleeping areas (upper floor) instead of mixing them together;
